304 vs 316L — the core difference
Both 304 and 316L are austenitic stainless steels, but 316L contains 2–3% molybdenum, which dramatically improves resistance to chlorides and marine environments.
- 304: 18% Cr, 8% Ni. The default grade for indoor and mildly corrosive service.
- 316L: 16% Cr, 10% Ni, 2–3% Mo. Lower carbon (the "L") avoids weld sensitization.
When to choose 316L
Specify 316L when your parts face:
- Coastal or marine exposure
- Chemical, pharmaceutical or food-acid contact
- Pool, desalination or humid tropical climates (common across Southeast Asia)
When 304 is enough
For appliances, kitchenware, architectural trim and indoor structures, 304 delivers 90% of the performance at a lower price. Most buyers in Thailand, Vietnam and the GCC start with 304 and step up to 316L only where corrosion risk is high.
Cost vs lifecycle
316L typically costs 20–40% more per tonne. But in chloride-rich environments the extended service life usually pays back within a few years. Ask for an MTC (EN 10204 3.1) so you can verify the actual chemistry.
